Sure there is. Of course grass in the front yards is rare but you see lots of sand and cactus. Our friends are Drs. in the Vegas area and raise kids there.

I lived in LV with for 9 years. My daughters were 18, 16 and 14 when we moved here. It was tough to move to a large city (which LV is) from a small town in N. Nv and it took its toll on the kids, but for the most part we did enjoy living there- most locals don't really go to the casinos or the strip- we just work, go to school, shop, go home, etc. like anyone else from any other place. We DID leave 6 years ago so my grandsons wouldn't have to go to school there- I found it to be too transient, including the teachers. I wanted a smaller school system for them and we found a fabulous one in a town outside of Nashville, TN. My daughter just finally moved here also so her daughter would start school here, also.
I found, during those 9 yrs. that there Were NOT enough child-related activities- it's still more adult oriented. Just my opinion

Your image of Las Vegas is (I'm assuming) coming from TV,ads, and here say.
While Las Vegas was dubbed Sin-city, and was started by the mob. Everyones opinion about Las Vegas is based on 1 street. Las Vegas Blvd.
Past the casinos there are suburbs, other cities, and a bunch of families moving here. Las Vegas is not just catering to the adults anymore, the are also catering to the families that have been here and also the new families that are moving here.
So to answer your question, Yes people can actually raise their families here. There are also things for the children to do here. Eve though its a desert out here, there are families with yards here, but the city asks to have a rock front yard, due to water limits due to it being a desert. Hope I answered your question.

Ha, being from the northeast I am surprised to work with people who have been raised in Vegas.
It's a community like any other. As far as front lawns goes, this is a desert community and lush green lawns should be discouraged. However, people do have green lawns.
There are really nice communities and I actually like it here. I've lived all over the country and Vegas feels like home.
Unlike Phoenix, it is very diverse and has more activities for families.

It is normal for people to think that amount is exaggerated even if they have kids. Up until last year my husband and I never gave much thought into the cost of having the kids we just paid it and went on. We finally set down one night to help our oldest work out a budget and we made one ourselves and we were floored with the amount we spend on the kids. We have three kids, they all play sports, the girls have dance and gymnastics, our son does karate, the youngest are in scouts and a few clubs at school, the oldest is in a lot of clubs at school. Then there is their school lunches, clothes, asthma medicines, AD HD med, monthly doctors appointments, te orthodontist for two kids. They all have cell phones so there is another bill and the oldest has her own car so more money there. If you are making it with spending $600 a month on a child then you are doing something right. Sure you could probably do it cheaper but there would be no insurance, no new clothes, no sports or fun activities for her. Tell your ex to get over it.

You should go there one day and try to explore outside of the main area. Even though there doesn't seem to be any suburbs, anything outside the strip generally tends to be very nice.
I've lived there for a few months, and it is definitely a very nice place to live once you get out of the strip. The outer parts are basically your ideal suburbs, the neighbors are nice, the roads are new, the schools are decent, etc.
In fact, I think that Las Vegas is actually one of the best places to raise kids in the US if you instill a strong moral sense into them.

Henderson next door is better. Avoid the area from west of the Stratosphere to downtown. However, all the people I talk to there say that as long as you do not gamble, it is a good place to live. The schools are well funded because of the revenue from gaming. The housing is decent priced. The traffic is still o.k. as long as you avoid I15 and the strip.
The hospitals are as good as any place. There are several parks with lots of grass. You can drive one hour and you are out in the middle of nowhere.

Las Vegas is huge, I am the 3rd generation born and raised in Las Vegas in my family. It is a very nice place to raise kids, and just like any city, there are great neighborhoods. Las vegas isnt just the strip or downtown, come visit and you will see!

Yes they have a school system and build new schools all the time. There is a sense of community here. I live in henderson outside of LV. This is a great place to raise children.
They have some exceptional athletic events that are child based.
Sunset Park in LV is a wonderful place to take the kids.
This is a great community.
