This is so very controversial!

For smoking cannabis while pregnant, check this traditional view out:
http://www.babycenter.com/expert/pregnancy/isitsafe/2490.html

If you're still reading, check this quotation as well:

"Pregnancy is known for great physical discomfort, and cannabis performs well as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent, and also to reduce the characteristic stress of pregnancy, by relaxing uterine contractions."

and:

" The “Prenatal Marijuana Exposure and Neonatal Outcomes in Jamaica: An Ethnographic Study” concluded that the children of prenatal marijuana users had significantly higher test scores of non-associative learning with auditory and tactile stimulation, a higher alertness, a greater ease in receiving comfort, and had fewer startles and tremors than typical babies following the first week of birth. After thirty days, babies had higher quality of alertness, more robust voluntary and involuntary reflex systems, less irritable and better organizational skills than children born of non marijuana using mothers. Longer term studies have shown there is no consistent evidence of any significant differences in the development of prenatal exposure to cannabis, against those who are not exposed. It can be determined that cannabis exposure is likely more benefit to children, than a hindrance."

There's also this cannabis beverage called Bhang.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhang

However popular in India, pregnant and nursing women are actually told to "stay away from intoxicants, such as bhang especially if you are pregnant or nursing."

Life's not easy.

Whether you are pregnant or not, anytime you light something on fire and take that smoke into your lungs you are going to do some damage to yourself. Not to mention that the effects of cannabis on the body may wear off after a few hours but the actual chemicals in the plant will stay in your body for weeks! Now imagine that you have a fetus that is growing and developing in your body...4-6 weeks can make a HUGE difference if you add into the equation added chemicals and things that could harm the development! I think as a general rule (and plain common sense!) you should stay away from things like this while you are pregnant and continue to stay away from these substances with a little baby that has no choice but to depend on you. Good luck and I hope you make the wise decision to avoid cannabis while pregnant.

Personally- I wouldn't smoke cannabis but it is a natural drug but because it is a natural drug does not mean it is safe as it has other effects on you health. Smoke on its own can stunt a babies growth and also cause babies to be underweight. Also I would Whether use of marijuana during pregnancy can harm the fetus is unclear. The main component of marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol, can cross the placenta and thus may affect the fetus. However, marijuana does not appear to increase the risk of birth defects or to slow the growth of the fetus. Marijuana does not cause behavioral problems in the newborn unless it is used heavily during pregnancy.

Some nice answers from the "nurses" on here. I don't know if they're really nurses, or if nurses are really that stupid.

A: Probably not much. See the link mystic_eye posted.

As with just about everything, it depends a lot on how much. One toke isn't going to do a thing (save perhaps make you less nauseated). Regularly being stoned, eh...probable problems.

scholar.google.com is great for questions like this.

"In a prospective study of 3,857 pregnancies ending in singleton live births at Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Connecticut, in 1980–1982,9.5% of mothers reported using marijuana (4.1% occasionally and 5.4% at least 2–3 times monthly). Among whtte women, regular use was associated with an increased risk of delivering a low birth weight (<2,500 gm) infant (odds ratio (OR) = 2.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1–6.2) and small for gestational age infant (OR = 2.3, 95% CI = 1.3–4.1) after adjustment for other risk factors. Nonwhite marijuana users were not at further increased risk for delivering a low birth weight or small for gestational age infant beyond the elevated rates of these conditions already experienced by nonwhites in general. Marijuana use was also related to preterm delivery (gestational age <37 weeks from last menstrual period) in white women (OR = 1.9, 95% CI = 1.0–3.9) but not nonwhtte women. Occasional use was unrelated to the risk of low birth weight, small for gestational age, or preterm delivery."

honestly to tell you the truth, it doesnt do a whole lot of damage but i would never recommend it, smoking cigarettes or doing anything else is far more dangerous than getting high, i still wouldnt do it though, whatever your body i feeling, your baby feels it and it is horrible to think about a precious little baby being all stoned in your belly, and in the 1st trimester it can alter the development of all your babys organ systems, although people smoke crack the whole time they are preggo and their babys come out fine as opposed to someone who doesnt do anything and their baby will come out with something major wrong, you never know and everyone is different, will it kill your baby? most likely no, but is it worth taking a chance at all? i think not, i wouldnt smoke anything while i was pregnant, and i suggest you dont either to be on the safe side.

Most scientists believe that it does, but it's very hard to know for sure. Women who smoke cannabis during pregnancy often use other substances as well, like alcohol and tobacco, so it's hard to separate the variables. But it's better to be safe than sorry!

The use of cannabis during pregnancy is controversial but if you look at the unbiased information using marijuana for medical purposes is often safer and more effective then prescription medication. However it is advised that you use marijuana in other ways just as a vapourizer, or by ingesting it.

OMG this is the most hilarious question!!! I was told by my doc that if one feels the need to do any drug that marijuana would cause the least effects. that will never be proven though. It is less addicting than caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco. do what you do just know the consequences. no one can judge you. i'd quit at least 2 months before cuz if you get tested at birth your child will be straight taken to cps and you'll be in jail.

A midwife told my friend, who was a heavy canabis smoker, that if she REALLY had to smoke it in pregnancy, she should smoke it pure without tobacco. However, I should imagine its probably best not to do it at all really.
