After falling and hitting a rock solid sheet of ice, my boyfriend's big toe experienced severe trama. The toenail was still attached, but we knew it would fall off eventually. It did fall off about a month later, but now (two month after it fell off), only about half of the nail is grown back. Wondering what kind of remedies might help to encourage faster regrowth. Right now he is using neosporin and covering it with a bandaid. Any help?

It takes time before it will fully grown.
Neosporin and covering bandaid only helps to prevent infection, which delays recovery.
Chill out and just wait.

I've lost both of my big toenails before (dropped a full dresser drawer on one, and dropped a chair on the other). After the toenail falls off, it could take several months for it to grow back. In fact, my toenails are just now looking normal after the traumas I put them through. It took about two years for them not to look funny or cause ingrown toenails!

Don't paint any product on the nail or nailbed, because the exposed skin is so thin and delicate, that any chemicals could harm the regrowth process or cause infection. As for neosporin, it was a good idea for the first few weeks, but now that there is regrowth, he should take his chances out in the open air whenever he can safely. Other than that, he should wear close-toed shoes whenever he can (making sure he has a lot of wiggle-room, and that the toe of the shoe is firm enough to protect any objects from reinjuring the area).

Regrowth really all depends on him. Does his hair grow fast? If it does, his nail should grow back relatively rapidly (which it sounds like it will, since half is back in only a month). Like the other guy said, gelatin can encourage regrowth, so eating things that contain gelatin, like... well, Jell-o, could slightly increase the regrowth rate.

Good luck!

nothing can really speed it up. But I would let it breathe without a bandaid over night. oxygen will help it grow and heal. I lost a toenail once too. It does take awhile, but like I said, I left the nail bed uncovered for a while too. If he is afraid to let it touch the bedsheets, then in the evening from when he gets home from work or school, until bed time will be good too. Hope he gets well soon!

He can take Knox gelatin to encourage keratin production, aiding in nail growth.

If it's already growing back in, take the bandaid off to promothe the new nail hardening properly.
