America has resisted a Nation ID Card. But a card for "Bad People" might go through. Then after a short adjustment WHAMMO Nation ID.

It's one of those primal things that people resist.

Because it is only appropriate. Immigration is far too often considered to be a zero-sum game, where one man's gain is another's loss. This is not the case!

Opening up our labor markets to foreign individuals benefits society as a whole. It CREATES wealth by allowing comparative advantage to decide who will pursue a given occupation. It is not simply a transfer of wealth.

There are a lot of jobs in America that Americans don't particularly want. There are also a lot of jobs that immigrants are willing to do for a LOT less money. This results in cheaper goods and services for all Americans. It is harmful to the general population to disallow free immigration.

It is true that a small group of Americans who hold jobs that immigrants seek may see lower wages in their current job in the face of freer immigration. This, however, is an economic signal that the status quo is not the most efficient arrangement. Allowing free immigration will allow economic forces to shape the labor market into the most efficient outcome.

We also tend to react very emotionally when the possible ill-effects of certain policy are very concentrated, even if the benefits are far greater but happen to be more spread out. Yes, as I just mentioned some individuals will have to adjust in the face of more immigration. This is very often the go-to point in the immigration debate. It is much rarer that people point to the lower prices that ALL Americans would enjoy were we to allow more immigrant labor.

In conclusion, a government would give free green cards to illegal immigrants because it is the economically sound thing to do.

I think it was a compromise between the Republicans and Democrats. Legalize the current ones, but allow more strict border control. It was actually a bi-partisan act. But it failed I believe.

I wish I knew. It's laughable to me that you can break the law in this country and still get to stay. We have immigration laws for a reason. Also, my friend's husband is an immigrant from India, it took them years to get here legally. It's ridiculous that just because a country is next door it's people get to break the law and come here.

It's the easy way out of a very sticky situation - simply throw in the towel and give in to their demands.
Kind of similar to the lefts approach to the war on terror.
