I would try to aim for at least 8 hours apart. 12 hrs apart would be best, but might not be practical for your schedule. Try to make taking your medication part of your everyday routine, such as always taking it right before brushing your teeth.

Nexium has a long half life and you could take both pills at once, however in this case your doctor probably wants you to take it before breakfast and before bedtime.

When you take it before breakfast make sure you take it 30 minutes before your first meal. The proton pumps are made in response to food entering the stomach, so if you give the drug time to get in your system they'll all be blocked, increasing your relief. If you take the pill with food, or too close to eating, the drug doesn't have time to get in your bloodstream and the pumps aren't blocked.

You can take the second pill anytime, but if you are having heartburn problems after dinner then follow the above advice.
