Aside from N, P, and K are a dozen micro nutrients (plant dependent) that are in plant metabolism and are used with sun dependent and sun independent reactions. I have a feeling that, as with animals, there will be a list of minor minors that will play an additional role even though a plant can function very well without. When animals left the ocean which contains all the elements on the planet, they took the ocean with them in the metobolism and physical bodies. Such is also for plants, I believe. But the basics are that, as it stands and has for some time. Chemicals all run in cycles and all play their role; and when missed they show up like the proverbial "sore thumb".

N P K

Nitrogen - Phosphorous - Potassium

Those are the three useful ingredients of fertilizer, and they are all essential plant nutrients. If you see a fertilizer labelled 10-15-5 for example, it means it has 10% N, 15% P, and 5% K by weight. The remaining 70% is just filler and binder.

There are many other nutrients a plant needs that can be obtained from most soil without the need for additives. Legumes such as beans and alfalfa can "fix" nitrogen directly in the soil from the atmosphere without fertilizer.

Plants consume CO2 from the atmosphere, not from fertilizer.
