First of all , U need to know that pythagoras is only applied on a right angled triangle (one of the angle is 90 degrees) and also to find its sides(Base OR Height OR Hypotenuese ) .

According to pythagoras theorem
(base)^2 + (height)^2 = (hypotenuese)^2 ( '^' means power )

Now consider a right angled triangle with base 'a cm' , height 'b cm' , to find its hypotenuese use the above formula
that is (a)^2 + (b)^2 = (hypotenuese)^2
and now u can find the hypotenuese.

Example : Consider a triangle with base=4cm and hypotenuese=5cm
Now using the formula of pythagoras
(4)^2 + (Height)^2 = (5)^2
16 + (Height)^2 = 25
(Height)^2 = 9
Hence Height = 9cm
