It is better for your computer to shut down than go into hiernate. Although windows can handle it, and almost all computers can handle it. MANY aps can't and if you hibernate, many aps will hang or bluescreen.

Go to control panel, power settings. There are pull down tabs that tell the computer what to do, and at which time, or on what action. You can create a profile for say, at school that would allow you to close the lid for privacy and another for the real world where closing the lid will mean shut down.

Yes. Go into the power setting (in the Control Panel). In the Advanced Options there shuld be a selection to set the action when the laptop is closed (usually the defaul it hibernation). You did not state the version of Windows you are using so the settings may be different, but every version sets it in the Control Panel.

If you left the computer running with the top down, the heat would dissapate into the screen. Heat is the number one killer of electronics so it was designed to shut down.
