There are a lot of guys playing either wing who are skate and score type players that arent known for their ability to muck in the corners. A lot has to do with the team style of play...who is playing the other wing or center (the NHL actually has some very good centers that love the dirty work along the boards) and who is on a particular players blueline (again there are some offensive D-men who will pinch down the boards). Some wingers play much better in the middle of the ice (i.e., in front of the net). Other wingers rely on speed to make quick forecheck plays to force turnovers so really it is a matter of a particular players own abilities along with the players on the ice with him plus the style of play each team chooses. So Yes...a winger can be just a scorer (provided that is what works on his team and he will get more chances if he is good defensively).

wingers jobs are to get infront of the hockey net if the puck is on the opposite side of the ice, if its in the middle u r trying to score or trying to set someone up for a goal, if its at the point you are either trying to tip the puck in or get a pass, and if the puck is in the corner on your side then you have to be able to win battles in the corners so you can make a pass out in front of the net for a goal or send it up the boards to the defensemen so he can either take a shot or pass it to someone else or back to you. so basically if you cant win battles in the corners you shouldnt be a winger, you should be a center, because defensemen have to do the same thing in the defensive end of the ice.

Wingers are supposed to patrol the area along the boards to the face off dots on the ice. That is why they are supposed to be puck diggers. That is thier area. Centers can also help dig out the pucks. There are wingers that can be finese guys. But I think it's better to do all of what your position classifies not just part of it.

Yes of course. You just need someone on the line that will get into the corners. Doesn't matter if it is the center or not. As for a scoring/sniper/set up man ... Look at Hull and Oates when they were together ... neither of them would venture into a corner.

While every player tries to play HIS game...when any team pulls together and is playing hard, I like to seem them fight for the puck every chance they get. You have to play to win at all costs. It is possible that a scorer/sniper hardly ever goes to the corners...but wow, a team just seems to have more depth when everyone fights for the puck. I like the players that contribute everywhere they can---even if it means a forward is sacrificing the body to block a shot (like Chris Drury did in the playoffs, for example).

Geez I dont know, why dont you ask Mike Bossy, Brett Hull, Jarri Kurri or some of the other wingers that terrorized goalies for years and could go into the corner with a dozen eggs in their pocket and come out with them unbroken.

Yeah totally!
There are tons of wingers in the league that aren't corner diggers.
Some of the ones i can think of off the top of my head are:
Teemu Selanne
Martin St. Louis
Alexander Ovechkin ((amazing rookie year!))
Ales Hemsky
That's all i can really think of but there are alot more!
