Why isnt there a unified scientific voice screaming about things like this? They foster and further ignorance on a massive scale...opinions? comments?

Why is this belief held onto so tightly in the face of so much evidence to the contrary?

So tell me nettyone, when you watch the Flintstones on tv, you see that as a documentary then, right? Dinosaurs and man, living together?

If that is your idea of common sense, i feel sorry for you.

fine netty, PROVE creation and the ark were real.

I can prove how old fossils are, and also how old most of the rocks on earth are, through uranium-lead dating. It is accurate to .1% in a range from 1 million to 4.5 billion years. I also might add it is also the oldest and most respected form of radiocarbon dating. So how do you expain this planet being made of rock that is far older than 10,000 years?

I'm willing to bet that any argument that you can throw back at me will be, at best, based on ignorance of the scientific processes behind radiometric dating, and at worst, the usual circular argument that is put forward by religion...because a 2000 year old book, which was written, rearranged, edited and voted on by men since then, says so.

If you cannot accept a simple scientific fact that has been proven over and over and over since the 1950s, ANY argument you make is irrelevent.

You might as well believe the Flintstones is a documentary.

I disagree virtualguy, there have been plenty of experiments done on say, mice.

A mouse is presented with 2 switches, one electrified, the other not. Both switches release food. I bet after a shock or two, the mouse will only go for the unelectrified one.

Now reverse the switches, so the button that the mouse is now used to hitting is electrified.
Do you honestly believe that the mouse will continue to hit the now-electrified button? And guess what, he'll go try the other button, and lo and behold, its not electrified and he gets food.

So what you're saying is that humanity, under religions influence, is actually stupider than the mouse becuase we wont at least try the other switch when were getting shocked over and over again?

Lot netty, you did exactly what i said you were going to do.

Those sites are laughable at the best. Also you might want to read them again, as the ones dealing with uranium lead dating do nothing to disprove the method, they only say that the ages arent quite as long as real geologists say they are, and in fact the Snelling article on Uranium dating contradicts your belief that the world is 6000 years old. He specifically mentions the fact that the samples he dated simply didnt agree with the much older estimates, but his figures still put them at several hundred millions years...
soooo maybe go read what your spouting first. But again i dont think you can understand the technical side, so i dont know what i expect.

And i get worked up about it because you are furthering ignorance and stupidity. The site you linked to is written by people that have been ostracized from the scientific community, and for good reason. But i guess they found an audience in religions fanatics huh?

There was a protest held by a group of scientists and secular humanists. Funny how no one mentions that in the news.

I think the problem is that most scientists are not willing to yell and scream and sue and lie until they get their way. And these people are. Scientists will not lie to you. These people will.

And if scientists step forward and complain about this, we hear that we're 'oppressing free speech', that we're 'persecuting the christians', that we're intolerant of other views. The problem is, very little of the American public really understands how science works, even after 12 years of school. They just never got it. And it's coming back to us now.

"Why is this belief held onto so tightly in the face of so much evidence to the contrary?"

For exactly the same reason that a belief that drinking (brand-name product here) is sexy results in trillions of dollars of worldwide commerce. We're wired to want to believe, and to hold onto beliefs in the face of evidence. It appears to go with having a vertebrate nervous system.

Response to disagreement - unfair comparison because belief is never so directly challenged. Nervous systems work on "reinforce success", no provision for sweeping up of unused connections except as they are coopted by more active systems. If I grouse to a friend that my girlfriend is granchety and he believes her birthday is October 30 and says, yeah, all those Scorpio girls are granchety, then forevermore in my head is the idea that scorpio girls are granchety. The facts that astrology doesn't work and my girlfriend was born on Oct. 2 have nothing to do with the connection in my head, and will be ignored or explained some other way if they come up. A preexisting scientific structure that doesn't allow for astrology can keep me from making decisions based on it - I think - but it's there. The grade-school science experiment now used to show electrical flow with a lamp, one wire, and a battery is an example of getting around preconceived ideas based on this kind of knowledge of nervous systems.

Well, here is the Yahoo-a-la Barde answer: (I only fear Asterix & Obelix's wrath)
There is a Taboo with us since Institutionalised Christianity precipitated us into the Hell of the Middle Ages:
Adam and Eve's Taboo.

What happened originally, exactly we don't know, but for a while, in archeology, on the Genetic map, it seems Dear Eve might be the Sex after all, yet she is still 'acting out' her pain of not having cried out of Shame at what Adam did with his Serpent.
It seems some 'Scientists' need to emphasize the believed Lie. It is the Basis of their hell on Earth.
Asterix, Obelix and I, (your Yahoo Fuschsia-made-in America), we think your REVOLUTIONARY American Midwife Ina May Gaskin and other Original Heads, are becoming a problem to the Scientism Community; you see she has CATAPULTED the whole Myth, by proving (Thousands numbers, Facts, all empirical blabla required for a REAL Scientific 'opinion'), she has proved WOMEN OPEN WIDE IN TENNESSEE.
Eve does not need to 'suffer' - why ? Well....it is not Puritanical her secret: it has to do with the knowledge of HOW, physiologically the Vagina Crowns. In Ina Hands, and other Classical Experts (Pagans' Knowledge of Birthing?), 95% of Women birth: open & close - unlike all the problems required by SACRIFICIAL procedures, and, in many cases, long, painful, expensive after-birth complications experienced in Scientific Puritanical Institutions.
So the Brutality of Ignorance is still in your words " fostered and furthered on a massive scale".

Yahoo has enough numbers on risks and consequences of episiotomies - episiototos - induction, epidural, c-section...etc
all the facts which complicate Labour. Plus all the factors responsible for keeping Pregnant Women fearful, and therefore 'confused': tests, tests, and more tests, not just scans, but ANATOMICAL Scans ( "just in case").Yahoo will have to give NORMAL BIRTHING, a Category if it is to remain representional & scientific.
It would be useful if as Skeptics you would read a bit of the long lines of Queues of the Sacrificial Lambs. What are their Choices, anyway ? Do you see, you, anyone in the Scientific Community inviting Ina May for a Debate on Television ?
Well ? Did you even know her name ? Do you know how much money could be saved and given tomorrow to the Environmentalists AND Scientists if Women in the Hands of 'Pagans' opened WIDE ? It is a very serious matter: Sacrifice.
So, yes: I am outraged, but it is The Taboo, these people want to perpetuate.
However, they are ridiculous: Ina May 's Guide to Chilbirth proves it: the Doctors who gave Birth at her Birthcenter were more fearful (and less Pagan?) than most. So, Dear Scientist, HOW do you leave Fearful Women at the mercy of SCARED people ? It is "the Blind Leading the Blind" - just like on your Link.
We are in the Middle Ages.
Let us call for the Renaissance.
Please, help us get some serious Classical Midwifery State-Funded Institutions - like the Fire Brigade.
Thank you Yahoos for your Scientific composure,
Keep us tuned, unified and hopefully... Crowned.

EDIT FOR YOU UP THERE NOT ON E-MAIL:
Do you know to what point, 'Scientists' are experimenting on poor Cats, in order to prove ALL sorts of NONSENSE about Women's pelvic Girdle ? It's immoral all this puritanical SUFFERING/DENIAL/BENDING of the WILL. It is out of Bruce Lee: Enter the Dragon.
By the Way: I am a French Woman living in 2007. I am an Animal, first and foremost.

Scientists today are too worried about staying out of the fray. We need a few really intelligent firebrands out there who do nothing but rebut silly arguments like these every time they appear in the media.

The media is guilty too. Contrary to what the right would have you believe, most of the media is so obsessed with being "fair and balanced" that a show or newspaper will search far and wide to present the arguments of the opposing camp, as if the views were of equal weight.

The truth is, not every viewpoint is of equal worth.

-----edit---
No one is saying they don't have the right to say what they want, we are just saying they are morons. How many times have "christian scientists" found Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat? I swear every two years or so i read of some new claim that it was found, yet the evidence never appears.

no because I am a naturalist and a believer in God. Science is in a lot of ways unbelievable and yet people still believe, but say you believe in God and the worlds coming to an end.....There is evidence of a major world flood....it has been studied a lot by NON CHRISTIANS trying to disprove Christians........there is evidence of dinosaurs and my church and I believe in there existance. The problem is we live in a society that has tv and internet and answers at our fingertips so when we have something that happened a long time ago it is hard for us to imagine. I dont know that there were dinosaurs on Noahs arc but I do not know that there werent.....why not let people think what they want to

That is absolutely absurd!

We have people one day away from being evicted from their homes for financial difficulty, out of control medical costs, babies starving to death and $27 million is being spent on this fallacious attempt to explain things?

These religious types claim to be the beacons of light for helping humankind but think nothing of building a meaningless museum.

What arrogance.

What elitism.

Not to mention the insult to my intelligence.

How could they????
Now this is BLASPHEMY in scientific terms!!

To be frank I think this news hasn't been publicized at an international level (I'm from India and am seeing it for the first time).........I don't have any idea about the furore in US regarding this!

But the creators ....how-much-ever deep-rooted christians they may be......their sole purporse is MONEY and nothing else.

Talk about dinosaurs on ship....however humungous it may be......that a thought.....LMAO....

And yes ....think want to bring flintstones to reality.......
LET'S have a YABBA DABA DO TIME everybody on Noah's ark!

This is simply another example of why so many Atheists are frustrated with certain Christians. You waste all this time explaining the provable. You waste all this time explaining principles and its place in critical thinking. You waste all this time telling them about what proof exists to discredit their Bible.

And this is what they do with it. No matter what we tell them. No matter what we show them. No matter how reasonable we're willing to be. They'll just mold it all to fit what they want to believe. And since the weak minded allow entertainment to do their thinking for them, we'll now have yet another generation with even more screwed-up minds.

I hate to say it, but I get the feeling that we're shooting ourselves in the foot for trying to be reasonable.

There are fools and there are Religious people.

These bigots can say all they want, just rewriting books and passing laws will not change nature.

I wonder how these 'God fearing' creationists would feel when their children are born 'evolved', significantly different from their parents due to adaptations to the world around them.

They can go to hell.
