Playing The Sims 2 needs you to meet the system requirements posted on The Sims 2 official site. However, this does not mean you need to buy the most up to date and expensive computers around. You can start of by looking at the components. The Sims 2 requires a lot of disk space. If you'll use your pc just for gaming, you can focus on 3 components: the hard drive, the graphics card and the RAM. If you are installing expansion packs along with The Sims 2, you can look for computers with 1GB of RAM. The higher the RAM, the better the performance of the pc for games. It is also advisable to have a graphics card such as NVidia, ATI Radeon or Intel. Your hard drive should at least have 10GB of free disk space especially if you will be installing other expansion packs. If you won't be installing other expansion packs, 3.5GB of free disk space will do.
Im not sure of the exact brand of computer you need to get but you can search in the internet for computers that have similar specs. You can check the official The Sims 2 site for more details. I hope this helped you.

The Sims 2 hardware requirements aren't that steep, so most desktop computers in the $500-700 range (not including monitor) will handle it nicely. Just make sure you've got a decent video card- at least a Radeon X1650 or GeForce 7300 (NOT integrated video on the motherboard) and 2gb of RAM.
Dell is ok (and offers tech support from a large company) but you'll get the best deals from someplace like Newegg.com -they normally sell components like cases, hard drives etc for people who want to assemble their own.
Here's another site to check, as well.

you can get a pretty decent computer for 1000. Anything you buy for 1000 will play the sms OK. Best value for the dollar is dell. Do NOT get a mini size tower. Sims 2 Pets expansion pack is known to be problematic, but all the other expansion pacs are ok

go here:
http://www.compuvest.com/Description.jsp?iid=464931&cid=446&sid=197
then take it to a computer shop and have them put 2GB or RAM in it. That is what i did, and it plays fine. Also, ask for Windows XP Home Edition. If you would like to have more performance, ask for a nVidia GeForce FX6600.
