There are several characteristics that usually indicate one gender or the other (color, fin size and shape, bubblenest building, flaring posture, ovipositor presence/absence), but some fish like to exceptions to these rules. The more you get indicating one or the other, the better the possibility. Of course if it lays eggs.....

NOTE: You can't rely on labeling in stores - I once bought a short-finned male that was labeled as a female - it was a pale yellow (non-color), so that made it even harder to sex it correctly.

First they usually lable them at the store where you bought them from. If not, males are longer finned and brightly colored than the females. All the females I've seen are drabber (some have a little more color than others), and the girls are smaller. Their fins are short and round. I've never owned a female but I do own males and healthy males will build a bubble nest at the top of the tank or bowl. They make the nest, care for the eggs and fry. Wow I sometimes wish I was a female betta!

Female Betta's are usually a lot smaller than the males and they don't have the bright colors that a male have, also the female is usually smaller The Males are brightly colored and have long beautiful tails that when they see another male or see them self they flare up in a fight stance. Some people put mirrors by the male tank so they can see them self so that they do flare there tails because they are beautiful. But you shouldn't do that to much because it is very stress full on them.
