Yes, it is, but it is also a day to ponder our freedom, which we have gained from the continual sacrifices which our soldiers make. We can mourn and remember our dead, but yet at the same time be grateful for the liberties which we enjoy, thanks to our brave men and women, both living and dead!
It is truly a solemn day, though. Maybe we should rephrase our greetings on this occasion to, "Have a blessed Memorial Day." We truly need to contemplate the great price which countless individuals have paid for our freedom.

My husband & I just disscussed this. Due to the fact of a expeince I had when I worked at a Bank at the Gulf war time. I wished my Customer A Happy Memorail Day. The customer broke down & cried, she explained to me Memorial Days aren't happy for us, our son just died in the Gulf War. I felt so bad.
My husband mentioned saying have a Blessed Memorial Day, however this would not be right to say to everyone either, due to religous beliefs. I am glad you asked & am curioues to see what people have to say.

Memorial Day is a solemn remembrance of those that have past so that we may live in freedom. "Happy" is not an adjective that is associated with this day. As a child born to two Marines, I thank them and all who served with the greatest honor and debt- their lives. Veterans Day we remember and thank the living. Memorial Day is when we should bow our heads and kiss the ground we walk on - freely.

People don't think about it, it is to honor the solders who gave up their lives for us in war. People are not thinking, I think they just want you to have a nice day, because most people do celebrate with a fun family picnic, or go to the shore for the long weekend. Most are not thinking that this really should be a day of mourning. I think the celebrating comes from the fact that it's also the opening of summer. Some towns do celebrate with a parade to honor the soldiers who died for us, and then get together for family fun.

Some people feel that it's the memories of the strength, courage and bravery shown by the various men and women we need to remember. The will of these people to fight and their courage to make the world a better place for us is a good thing to remember. It's not a sad thing to remember.

Your absolutely right. It's the national day of morning, for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. There's nothing to be happy about except, the fact that we are still free, and this will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.
