Ipsum esse is existence itself. God is the Being whose essence is existence and who can never not exist. God is existence, without God there would be no existence, therefore God can never not exist.

Thomas Aquinas was one of the first great Christian apologists. He attempted to prove the existence of God by the Cosmological argument - here it is:
Cosmological Argument
Things exist.
It is possible for those things to not exist.
Whatever has the possibility of non existence, yet exists, has been caused to exist.
Something cannot bring itself into existence since it must exist to bring itself into existence which is illogical.
There cannot be an infinite number of causes to bring something into existence.
Because an infinite regression of causes ultimately has no initial cause which means there is no cause of existence.
Since the universe exists, it must have a cause.
Therefore, there must be an uncaused cause of all things.
The uncaused cause must be God.
According to him, he refers to God as the starter of the existence of things - the winder of the watch, so to speak.
Strength - his argument was one of the first and remains one of the easiest to follow arguments for the existence of God.
Weakness - his argument still fails to account for the existence of God. By this argument, if all things need a cause to exist, then so does God. According to my source at carm.org: But this only pushes causation back and implies that there must be an infinite number of causes which cannot be.
It was an awesome apologetic argument considering how long ago it was formed. There are far better lines of reasoning and debate concerning the existence of God now, though.
