No, you can't do it. It would take a series of unshielded wires to do this, and a little wind could cause a fire. Besides, it's illegal to "booby trap" your home. If anyone would get hurt, you'd be responsible.

Why not try an alarm system. We have a system that uses motion sensors about the same as motion lights. When it senses movement, it'll set off an alarm.

If you have a pitched roof (not flat) I would throw some sand up on the roof. That'll get them down. Otherwise, I would call the police or buy a pellet gun and hide in the bushes. This is a great recreational and educational device. You'll have fun and teach whoever it is to stay off your roof... A more lawful way of handling the problem would be to call the police when you hear them on your roof. I would make sure that it is in fact a person as opposed to an animal such as an opossum or a raccoon. You might try tossing some flour or chalk dust to see if there are any tracks.

With the electric "fence" it sounds like it is shorting out so it is touching something that is conducting the electricity. If there is a person running around on your roof, chances are they are not wearing shorts, rather jeans or something to that effect so the shock wire will have little effect besides maybe tripping them up, in which case, if they fall off your roof, you could get sued, or worse, have to live with guilt. Good luck with it. Remember those 3 little numbers. 9-1-1.

Not knowing what sort of roof you have, it's sort of toutgh to say whether electrifying the surface is possible or not. It is, however, illegal to, as a couple of the previous answerers have said, BOOBYTRAP your premises, in any way that may cause harm to someone, whether they are there illegally or not. You could be sued by the person you harm, and prosecuted by the governmental unit under which you live, for either manslaughter or negligent homicide if someone were to slip off the roof due to being shocked, and die because of the fall. Not a good idea. Most likely what you're hearing is raccoons or squirrels running around on the roof. They can make quite a racket.

You shorted out the wire and blew a fuse or tripped a breaker. What you want to do is very, very dangerous, and probably illegal. If it shorted out, it could cause a fire.

Why do you think there's someone walking around on your roof? Do you see footprints in the snow, or some other evidence of it? Are you sure it's not just animals? We had a squirrel in our attic once, and it was annoying, but not dangerous otherwise.

If you're sure it's someone on your roof, call the police or get an alarm system. But if it's animals, you'll have a lot of false alarms, and probably have the neighbors mad at you.

Is your roof sloped or flat? If it's sloped, maybe putting something slippery on the roof would be a good idea. If it's flat, perhaps... put a dog on a leash up there at night?

Maybe you could have your neighbors throw stuff at him?

You should consider whether or not you would be liable if you shock someone and they are injured, or worse, killed by you actions. You could end up in prison, which is a worse situation than you now have.
