My wife is 16 days postpartum after C-section. She has had very little bleeding, until yesterday when she gushed and filled a pad in a matter of seconds and then filled the toilet. It happened again today too. She's also passing clots as well. Other than these episodes, she had experienced normal "period" symptoms. Are there any explanations for the gushing and clots?. Her nurse told her yesterday if she fills a pad once/hour she needs to go to the ER. It hasn't been that serious, but we are concerned.

If she filled a pad in a matter of seconds, she needs to go back to the hospital. She may have torn her incision on the inside. Look at it and see of you see anything that doesn't look right. But regardless, that much bleeding after a c-section isn't normal they clean you out pretty good. I have had 3 and never had nothing more then very light bleeding.

I'm a little confused. First you said she filled a pad in a matter of seconds. Then you said that her nurse told her that if she filled a pad within an hour, that she should go to the ER. Finally, you said it "hasn't been that bad". If she filled the pad in a matter of seconds, and then went on to fill the toilet, and she is "gushing" blood, I would say that she should have followed the nurse's recommendation and gone to the ER yesterday. Why is she still home if she's bleeding profusely? Take her to the ER NOW.

Better safe than dead.

I recently had a c-section and I had the same thing I started bleeding lightly then it was really heavy and full of clots! I was concerned too so I did go to see the doctor, he said that it was quite normal to bleed like this after not having periods for 9 months and also after a c-section! He did also say that if the clots where any bigger than a golf ball size go to ER straight away! I was bleeding quite heavy for a week but it did slow down and eventually stopped! If u are concerned seek advice!

Hope this information helps!

I had a similar situation-my doctor said the clots were probably "retained tissue" from the placenta...and that the other heavy bleeding could be expected for up to 6 weeks or so. Maybe it would be a good idea to get your wife an iron supplement to compensate for her blood loss. I know that the ER is last place you want yourselves, but, it's probably the safest option-I would page your doctor and tell him/her what the nurse recommended in case of excessive bleeding. I was told that it was all "normal" though it really was alarming. It did slowly subside but that took the full 6 weeks for me.
If your wife is taking ibuprofen or aspirin based medicine for any pain she may still have, this could lead to heavier bleeding, (as it thins the blood). Tylenol doesn't work as well but it doesn't thin the blood like the others.
I wish you all the best.

My son is 16 months now, so I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I think I bled heavily for about a week, and then had what I considered a light flow for another week, followed by a week of spotting. Somewhere in there, I stopped completely for about 4 days, and then started back up again. With a cesarean, the doctor actually suctions a lot of it out before closing up, so there is less fluid in there that needs to come out. It's perfectly normal.

Ok let's start with I've had 2 natural births and my last was a c-section and I have never experienced that before. She shouldn't be "gushing" at all. She could have a small laceration on her uterus they missed or one of the stitches on the uterus itself have come un-done.
Take her to the er asap. It could be serious and it might be something simple or it could be normal (remember all women are different and so are the experiences we have during delivery and post...we can have 10 deliveries and none will be the same) but, do not take any chances with her life.

Sounds normal to me. Clots are very normal. Scary but normal. Was she more active on those two days?? That could be why there was more blood. I bled like that for about 4 weeks!! Women are different and will have different amounts of blood.
