As mentioned, be sure you tuned up good. Change the Fluid and Filter in the Transmission, drain the Torque Converter too, just takes a little more fluid when you re-fill. Check for any Vacuum Lines that go to the Transmission for breaks. I not seen a C-4 in many years, not really remember if it have a Vacuum line. LOL! Also, check if it have a Band adjustment, mine had a front and rear adjustment, yours may not?
I had a 1966 Mustang with a C-4 and I did rebuild it myself. The rebuild kit today may cost more than when I did it. It really not a hard Transmission to do a rebuild on, get a book!!!! Main thing is having a good clean area to work and keep everything clean.
Auto-Zone sell a Repair manual for around $15 tell the minor stuff. They also have a specific Transmission Manual for about the same price.

Make sure your ignition tune-up items like spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor (if you have cap and rotor) are good first. If you change the spark plugs, take the time to check each cylinders compression with a compression gauge. Air flow into the engine (change air filter after 20,000 plus miles) and through the exhaust (catalytic converter back pressure too high?) affects horsepower output and acceleration. Of course check the transmission fluid level. If your engine is misfiring for any reason (and you may not feel it), your knock sensor could be activated and retard your spark timing. Read out your check engine light error codes even if you haven't seen the light come on. http://www.actron.com

You could probably use some sort of treatment but, it sounds like your tranny is on its way out. If I were you, I would look into replacing it. It sounds like a major problem. Best wishes!
