Wear a knee-lenght cocktail dress. You can get them at JC Penneys, Dillards, Macys and places like that.

Well, people wear all different types of dresses. It depends on the one you're going to because some people don't even wear dresses at all. If I were you, I would go for a fun brightly-colored dress that YOU CAN DANCE IN. That is a MUST. =] Trust me, you won't have fun if you can't move around in it.
Some good stores to check out are Macy's and Jessica McClintock [sp?]

Wear a nice dress to your friend's Bat Mitzvah.
I don't know how they're done nowadays, as it's been since the early 70's that I went to one - mine -1974.
Mine was on a Friday evening at a synagogue in Maryland. I wore a formal, long dress... had my hair done, and had a photographer.
My brother's was on a Saturday evening... an even bigger deal that included dinner for the guests...
So, I would say to you to wear a nice dress, as though you were going to a dressy function.
