Stay on the Canadian side. Its nicer, there is more to see and do and you can drive over, get a hotel a few blocks from the falls and walk to everything. The Canadian side has a lot of attractions plus a casino. Yes you can drive the rental there; just make sure that your rental policy does not have a prohibition against it.. if it has a prohibition and you go anyway, just don't have an accident.

You can drive a rental across the border. With the Canadian dollar being so strong, you may want to stay in Niagara Falls NY. Your buck will go farther.
