(sorry, this is not rude question, I jus serioulsy don't understand why this is)
I took a japanese class (because my japanese/korean parents wanted me to), and I noticed that all the american classmates wanted to move to japan "when they got older", wanted to live there, work there, wear kimono/yukata, give up english language for japanese one, and be their religion...??? They loved anything to do with japan, including cartoon books, the last samurai (I hate that movie, but they all insisted it was the best movie ever, aside from memoirs of a geisha), listened to j-pop & j-rock, tryed to dress "japanese street" style or "gothic-lolita harajuku" style.
I started to notice ALOT of people in my high school acted like this... I'm not in school right now, but I know they still are like this, why is that?
don't get me wrong, all cultures and peoples are unique and interesting, but I never see this kind of thing done about china, south korean, veitnam, thailand, india, etc.

well, it's because the Japanese culture is super awesome. From anime to music to food to their language to heck ANYTHING, their culture is just so sophsticated. Just the way their language sounds is amazing; common words like "Hi" or "Thank you" sound so cool in Japanese. Their culture has this aura of excellence, awesomeness, and sophistication that just makes it well... excellent, awesome, and sophisticated.

I admit, I am some what intrigue by Japanese culture. It all started (like with most people) with anime. I do like quite a bit of the music as well. As for the fashion, well, some I like, some I don't. I'm not an extreme fan; I love all kinds of music and I love any cartoon with a good plot before I even was interested in Japanese culture, so I'm sure I will always like some anime and some Japanese music to some degree.
But I think for most people, it's just a fad. It's something different and new to them, and once that wears off, they'll be on to something else.
I can't answer for everyone else, but I simply like many of the animation and movies, simply for the art story plots. The plots are unique (well, to me anyway) and as a big lover of animation, my fave would have to be 2-D animation. Here in America, we are over-run by computer-animation (which in my opinion does not really express true art talent) and on occasion when we do have 2-D animation, it sucks. As for the music, well I just like it.

All of the military bases in Japan and Korea are leased to the United States through mutual protection treaties. This basically states that if either of these countries are threatened, then the United States is obligated to help them, and vice versa. A case in point, during Operation Desert Storm, the Japanese military, unable to deploy beyond their own borders due to the rules laid down in their surrender at the end of WWII, provided medical personnell, as well funding.

I don't know about Korea, but I used to live in Okinawa and I know a lot about that. The story with Japan is that after the war we put a clause in their constitution that they could not have their own military so that there could be no risk of another war. But, since they had many many many enemies after the war who *still* would love to get payback and China which would love to occupy Japan if they got the chance, we agreed to be their defense. In Japan, particularly Okinawa, it is not Americans that they object to, and they really do appreciate the service we provide and the jobs that we offer them in economically depressed areas (Okinawa is the poorest province in Japan), but the idea of any military that they object to, since they remember the war as being very ugly and traumatic for them. In fact, most Okinawans see the American presence as protecting them from mainland since they are very bitter about the Japanese sacrificing them during the war (Okinawans are ethnically Indian, not Japanese, and have their own culture and religion which mainland has actually forbidden them from practicing). The protest groups you hear about are vastly in minority, and if you research them, they are actually fronted by foreign interest groups who bought up the land rights to the area underneath the bases (which were parcelled out after the war on condition that the parcells will be returned to the family after the military leaves), paying rediculously little money for them by telling the families that the plots were so small and useless as to not be worth their investment. Then they stir up trouble, particularly amoung the youth who don't remember the war, hoping to seed anti-American sentiment so that these foreign groups can swoop in and reclaim the land. And how is that in the Japanese people's interest? Pretty much the only people who have legitimate beefs with Americans and the military presence in Japan are the families who were wealthy land owners before the war, since their land was taken, broken up, and redistributed to the poor after the war. Btw, I believe Japan has amended their constitution recently that their military can participate in foreign affairs, and while they may vote to reduce the number of American bases in the future, I doubt they ever decide to kick us out completely, because we really do keep their enemies at bay. Russia hates them. The Koreas hate them. China hates them. India hates them. You name it, everyone in the region hates Japan because of the very ugly things they did during the war. And the second we step out, they know it will get horrible for them. No one disputes that.

I know the type of dudes you talking about and I used to hang out with ppl like that.....I am not into anime and J-pop/rock, but I dig Japanese culture.....they are technologically advance, they are urban, and they seem to just do their own thing without worrying about being cool....they just have fun

I would definitely check out Japan if I could get there....all the ppl I knew in the military that were stationed there really liked it

I like japan because it's interesting. I'm a fan of anime and I like the language. I'd even like to visit there someday just to say i've gone. But I wouldn't want to live there.
