I have a gas hob and have just cleaned it, however the steel caps (I don't know what they are called but they sit on top of the gas jets that allow the gas to come out in a circle) have gone very dark grey. I put them in the dishwasher as I thought they needed a good clean. Any idea how to get them back to the stainless steel look as the hob is also stainless steel?

The outer surface of the jets is likely oxidized, so you will have to remove the very top layer of metal to make it shine again. Check a hardware store for stainless steel cleaner, I have one called "PEEK". It is an anti-oxidant foam cleaner. Good luck!

I would think they are more likely to be aluminium than stainless steel. An automotive metal polish, that's slightly abrasive(solvol autosol, in a tube, springs to mind), will take any surface oxidisation/discolouring away. Worth a try by the sound of things as you don't seem too happy with the way they are at the moment.

There's a new product out, Cif stainless steel cleaner. You could try that as most Cif products are very good. It's just a shame the name always reminds me of a STD!

Sounds like they are (were!) polished aluminium, not steel, which doesn't like dishwashers!! you will have to take them to a metal finisher/polisher. Don't put them in the dishwasher again.
