Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood to my mind the real victor of Trafalgar. He broke through the French line before Nelson got there assumed command when Nelson was shot fought on till the battle was won and brought the battered fleet through the worst gale that century.

Ghandi was a pretty solid dude, passive resistance and all that. You had to give it to William Wilberforce as well and the part he played in the ending of the slave trade. I think the Chartists were really important in England and the feminists that followed them.
By the way, if any says Oliver Cromwell I'm going to have to seek them out and slap them senseless!!

I would have to say Sir Philip Sidney. He was a true Renaissance man.

It was after reading a biography about him when I was in high school that I realised how important it was to be very good at a number of things -- especially in this age of specialisations.
