It can be either, depending on the dream. Have you ever had one of those dreams where you're killed? I used to have this recurring dream where I was clutching a rope that was dangling over a huge pit. The rope would break and I would fall. I could see the ground rushing up at me....then bam, awake.

Most of the time I just wake up when I'm done sleeping--when the sleep cycle has run its course. But sometimes if the dream is traumatic enough, your internal fear response can cause you to wake up ahead of schedule.

Well, we wake up when our body's metabolic system shifts into its catabolic phase. Then, body cells tear themselves down in support of the body's need to be mobile. The body can only handle this for a few hours. This becomes the stimulus to wake the body up.

i think its both.
cause usually, when you wake up; you cant go back to sleep and dream the same dream you had. and your awake so i guess your body says thats the time to get up.

well, your body has this circadian cycle, so it's your body that "wake" up; b/c you have many sleep cycles. and when you're in your rem you're in the" rapid eye moment" sleep which is the deepest sleep you get into. so back to the circadian cycle, your body slowly bring you fr. different levels of sleep until you're awake.
