females have an ovipositor that is very small spot on their undersides that is where the eggs come out. there are short finned males that are mistaken for females.

here is a picture of a female with an ovipositor that is kind of larger than average -- its that spot on the underside inbetween the fins --

The trouble here is, that although there are a lot of characteristices that are used, there are some exceptions to them - except for laying eggs. The best you can do is to look at several of these characteristics and see which gender most of them would indicate: http://ausaqua.net/files/sexingbettas001.html

I've had a few males with the ovipositor and a male with short fins (plakat). Also, one brightly colored female that was larger than any male I've ever owned. By the time you see them in stores, they are mature enough that there shouldn't be that much additional fin development.

Male tend to have dark colors, and longer fins than femalees. A femal will usually be white, with shorter fins. So if they are not fighting you have a male and female.

you need to look at how they act with each other. if they are fighting you have two males. If they aren't then you have a male and a female. Also females are usally bright red or light colored.
