The Picts were the ancient inhabitants of Scotland. They built no schools, no universities. Their language is a mystery; the meaning of the symbols stones they left remains an enigma. Despite having uncovered several examples of Pictish houses in Orkney, we can only speculate about their everyday life, religion and social structure.

There was a religious centre on the isle of Iona which was Druidic, but I'm not sure if that was considered Pictish, though it is just off the coast of Scotland. There is also the mystery of the stone brochs in Pictland, who built them for instance. If it was the picts, it suggests some kind of larger sphere of education which is able to impart building skills over a wide area. The Picts are largely unknown to us, though are thought to have spoken a language akin to welsh, certain pictish words have at least shown a similarity to p-celtic.

I don't know that I would say that the Picts were any more backward than the rest of Europe.
At the time of Pictish domination of Scotland, there were no universities, and precious few schools anywhere, and literacy was extremely rare.
IIRC, the first universities were not established until the late Middle-Ages, by which time, the Picts had been over-run by Scoti and Norse invaders.

Don't see how they could. Hardly anyone else in Europe had done so at that time and the Picts were more backward than most of the other social groups.

impossibe to know becuase they left very few records. certainly they may have had schools of higher learning but no evidence as of yet has been found. it is still unclear what language family the pictish language belongs to. it is clear it is non-indo-european and that it is related to the rhaetic language of northern italy.
