but it was nestling in the cocoon of the laptop case. It is working as per normal but is it possible if there's any damage to it?

It was not switched on at that point of time. My friend took the bag and placed it on the chair and it somehow slid to the floor :(

The most likely candidate to suffer from concussive damage from a short-range fall like that would be the hard drive. If the laptop was powered off at the time, it's more likely the hard drive resisted the damage. If the computer was active and the hard drive was spinning, the odds of physical damage being inflicted upon the platters is much higher.

Go into your system tools and run Scandisk at your soonest convenience, and select the option to perform a hard drive surface scan. If there are any damaged sectors on your drive, that will detect it. You will have the option to flag those sectors as bad, preventing the hard drive from attempting to use them in the future. That'll buy you some extra time, until you're able to buy a replacement drive.

It's possible, but if it's working alright, there's no problem. Anyways, theres nothing you can do about it unless you bought a accidental damage warranty, and then you have to PROVE that there is a HARDWARE issue. Don't worry, just be careful in the future. Happy computing!
