A MacBook is made with high quality. While many assume that there are no viruses, you can get them... Safety and security issues should not be ignored. Take a look at MacAffe and Symantec; they both sell Anti-virus and security products for MAC. So pay attention to these issues. But look at the MacBook that they sell at the Apple Store near you. You should SEE the model with your eyes, and not be looking at pictures or looking at specsheets. Visit http://www.apple.com Then, look for a store near you.
In general, PCs run many many more programs than Macs. You are interested in so many things, and you will surprise yourself when you find that the MAC CAN'T to this or that. So I would lean toward a PC for that reason. More people can help you with your PC, so you won't be ALONE. But maybe you won't need help with your MAC.
But YES, with a PC you have to be ever-diligent. I recommend that you visit Staples or Costco and look at the Toshiba. These will cost a bit less and are very reliable. Look at the HP laptops too. I recommend these two stores because they have a NO HASSLE Return policy. Watch for the awesome discounts. You might find a real bargain at Wal-Mart. They are fairly RETURN FRIENDLY too.
You see, it's all about the MONEY. Let's say that your laptop is good for 6 years. At $600, that's $100 per year. At $2400, that's $400 per year. You see, you still get just 6 years, no matter how much you spend. But laptops BREAK and get stolen. Be careful. You should NOT let anyone borrow your laptop. The Toshiba has a Fingerprint security system that is WAY COOL.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Macs are just as susseptable to viruses as pcs, but there are less people writing viruses for macs because its a much smaller target. If I was majoring in music and journalism, I'd choose mac. Both those industries are dominated by macs so when you intern or get a real world job, you'll already be comfortable. But for all other majors, I'd choose PC. Assuming you choose a good mfgr, they're more relaible, cheaper, better software and more practice in real world aps.

Get a pc. I personally prefer it over macs. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with macs, i just prefer pc's more. Come to think of it, based on what you're lokking for, both a pc and a mac can deal with it pretty well.

if you don't want a computer that is vulnerable virsues, why did you ask this question ? You already know the answer. You said you want a notebook that has no virsues, and you know windows PCs are vulnerable to virsues, so why did you bother to ask PC or Mac?
Think before you ask questions. People like you make me shake my head.
If you don't want virsues, get the one that has no virsues.
