was wearing no shirt and there was a huge lump in the middle of his chest. I didn't want to be rude and ask what it was, but I'm really curious. Do you have any idea what it could be?

He may be sick.
I don't see anything wrong with gently asking your friend if her Dad is ok? But be ready to let your friend lean on you if he isn't and she needs to talk.
If you can't handle that, or be a true friend, then don't ask.
Forget about it.
Only ask if you really care and want to help.

ask you friend but if she doesnt want to share then dont pressure her
