You can call the New Jersey Department of Fish & Wildlife. They can identify the particular species (because there are several native to New Jersey) and tell you what they eat.

Wild turtles eat wild stuff.
If, it look like a water turtle then it may eat a small fish. Pet shops sell small feeder fish and they do have turtle food your new friend may enjoy.
Land turtles may eat crickets and I know they love tomatoes. Again a pet shop would have a treat for it too.
Before you call the phone number given above you may want to read the link. Possesion of Native Box Turtles is forbidden and you may need to let your friend go home.

Wild turtles can eat many things but don't discount live food. They enjoy crickets and anything that moves. As far as vegis and fruit go they like bananas, cantelope, spinach, romaine lettuce. Don't feed your turtle iceberg, it has no nutritional value. Mix it up but beware, wild turtles that become captive may refuse to eat and often starve themselves to death. If you turtle won't eat promptly return it to it's habitat.
Also, turtles like to soak in water. If you have a shallow cake pan fill it with water and construct a method for your turtle to get in and out. Make sure your water won't cover your turtle's head when it gets in. Your turtle will probably go to the bathroom in this water so be prepaired to change it frequently.
By the way, I think you have a box turtle.

Turtles can be expensive to feed, especially since they are exotic pets, and pet stores do not carry too many brands of turtle food. You have probably seen the words "food stick" appear quite a few times on the site, so let us explain what these are. Buying feeder fish can be quite expensive in the long run, food sticks can help keep your turtle healthy.Turtles can be expensive to feed, especially since they are exotic pets, and pet stores do not carry too many brands of turtle food. Hello..please don't keep the turtle, they need more then food to survive, you could irreparable damage that will slowly kill this turtle, not to mention the dieseases they can carry that they are immune to, but your family, you ..other pets are not ..especially aquatics ...put the turtle back & enjoy him in the wild..you can try marking him with a DAB of paint, not the whole shell to go back & see how he's doing & how happy he will be to be free !! Take Care :) P.S People you have to not condone & support people taking things from the wild, trying to make them pets, etc..this is driving me nuts, it's not good nor right for the creatures of Nature to have this done to them, not good for the enviroment nor the families of these people, who do not realize the damage they can cause..if you want reptiles ..Buy Captive Breds, do not take from Nature, not too mention it's illegal & subject to hefty fines !!
