Ok, well it's a bit unclear to me what you're looking for.
If you want (-16)^2, then you should do -16(-16), and remembering that a negative times a negative equals a positive, you will get 256.
Now, if you want the square root of -16, or n^2=-16, n being the number you want to find, remember that a square root of a negative number is imaginary and doesn't exist. So, remember that -1(16) is the same as negative 16, and the square root of 16 is 4 and the square root of -1 is i, multiply them together giving you 4i.
Hope it helps, whichever you're looking for.

Square of -16 is +(product of two negatives is positive). Same as 16 x 16. Some answers are concerning square roots. Is that your question?

Since not everyone seems to agree, let me clarify.
The square of -16, i.e. "minus sixteen squared", is (-16)(-16) = 256. Remember that when you multiply two negative numbers, the answer is positive.
The "square root" of -16 is 4i, where i is the 'imaginary number' defined as the square root of -1.
