I have raised 9 teenagers and never ever resorted to hitting.

Depends how old she is. I am 24 now and I was the youngest of three, so I grew up with older parents than my siblings did. I felt that when it came around to me, their paitence had run out a bit and I felt they patronised me too much and never understood which age I was really at.
I always felt an age older than my real age. I mean I travelled the world by myself at 17 and then after I finished University left home to travel the world again and ended up settling in Greece where I now have a husband, a baby girl and a business.
If your daughter is 15 and up, I really would treat her like an adult and speak to her like one. Grant you, she will act like a child occasionaly, but she is entitled to. Whilst respecting her maturity, you also have to be careful not to steal her childhood from her and expect things to go too quickly.
I suggest talking to her, like you would talk to your wife...sister...any female equal, but with that edge of authority and see how she accepts that.
