Alison W is correct- it's amazing how quick people are to say no to these questions when they don't have the knowledge to back it up.
it isn't fool proof but having sex a few days before ovulation and then refraining close to ovulation does increase your chances of a girl. There is a chapter on this in the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility.
The timing should be distance from ovulation and not her period since not all woman ovulate at the same time.

No, a child's sex is determined by the males sperm, so it does not matter when you do it. An individual sperm cell has a certain vague resemblance to a very skinny tadpole, and it is composed of three main units: head, body, and tail. Its total length is about 1/600th of an inch. The head, which is only 1/10th of the length of the sperm, contains twenty-three special bodies (chromosomes) carrying the man's inheritable characteristics. No. Some people say that having sex just before ovulation increases your chance of having a girl and therefore having sex after ovulation increases chances of a boy, but it's just an old wives tale.

It is proved that female (X chromosome)sperm last longer but swim slower, boy sperm (Y chromosome)are quick but don't have endurance, thus the theory that if you have intercourse further away to ovulation you increase your chances of a girl......increase the likely hood is all it cannot guarantee. (women ovulate 14 days after their first day of their period, optimum days to fall pregnant is one day before, one day after and on the day 14). Hope this clarifies things. Men determine sex as they carry both chromosomes......girl sperm last longer but boy sperm swims quicker, so there is a chance of increasing the odds slightly.

No. The sex of a baby is determined by the male chromosomes, not the female ones. It is a matter of which sperm wins the race, not a particular time in the female cycle.
