A man and a woman go out on a first date. While eating dinner at an expensive restaurant, the woman insults the man, and the man decides to end the date before dessert. He stands up and places cash on the table equivalent to the value of the food he ordered for himself, plus a generous tip. The woman demands that he pay for her as well. The police arrive to settle the matter. What happens next? Who is legally required to pay?

If the police have to arrive to settle the matter, someone will likely be arrested for disorderly conduct. The civil matter is one for the trier of fact, and depends on what the parties can tell the judge was the pre-agreed upon arrangement. The stupidity of this idea is outrageous. Dinner 20$ or Hundreds in bail and court costs.

Two choices:
She is required to pay for her food. The man was intending to give her a gift (pay for the meal) but, before delivering the gift, changed his mind.

He is required to pay for her food. She detrimentally relied upon his representation that he would pay for her food and she ordered accordingly. Had she known that he was not going to pay for it, she would not have ordered what she ordered.
