Maybe because there is a mis-communication between their conscious and unconscious mind!!! What may have been a useful and workable unconscious talent may not be useful anymore but it is still being used...to that persons hurt!!! And because there is pain involved (emotional)...sometimes that person can't look at the source because it is too painful and there is a circling of the emotions. But I believe that if the person can recognize the source of pain...(or actually follow the pain to it's source)...they can change the behavior thats causing them trouble (or causing more pain)!!!...Hopefully thats been helpful...Spiritwalk777

Ha ha. Well I think you've found the right person it answer this question. :-D

This summer was the changing point in my life: I started cutting, became anorexic, got depresson, started drinking, started smoking, became a colder person, and things like that. All that was caused by the genetic disorders I inherited from my parents, the way I grew up, how everyone else treated me, society, the guilt I had from treating others badly, and just some of it from pure enjoyment.

Really, selfdestructive behavior might not seem too bad for the people engaging in it. I didn't see my anorexia as a problem at all. When I was getting down to 90 lbs. (about 35 lbs under the weight I should be to be 'normal'), I didn't want it to change. My mind wanted me to think everything was okay, that stick thin was awsome, and that perfection was the ultimate goal. Obviously that's not true, and I realize that now after spending a month and a half in recovery as an in-patient, and about 8 months as an out-patient gaining weight to recover.

The selfdescrustiveness of drinking and smoking don't phase me, even now. I know they're bad, but I like them and became so apathetic to the value of my life, that I just really don't care what happens. I guess that's caused by my depression, my personality, and the rest of my life in general.

I guess my point is, people who take part in selfdestructive behavior can have tons of problems with themselves, their environment, their life, or just not care and enjoy the things that can kill them. It's a vicious cycle, but you can't understand it until you've been a part of it. I'd say go out and try to experience it yourself, but that not such a good idea. *lol* If you don't understand why some people engage in selfdestructive behavior, be glad. You're better off in the long run.

It happens a lot more than people like to think. Why does a pissed off man who's losing his family going through a divorce and losing his job punch a hole in the wall, or blow their brains out, get drunk.

Sometimes it's a feeling of punishment. Why do some religions involve pain as teaching. They feel physical pain justifies a wrong. Some may do it for attention but, certainly not all. There are people that quietly drift by.

It may be a case of devaluing and submitting to simple pleasures because the bigger ones are far to reach. And on some account someone may hurt themselves and feel like they are punishing someone else.

It is strange how people can feel that they can just eradicate their pain by hitting or slamming something. By getting wasted and doing thoughtless things. Are they following what they feel is a suggestive by nature in their perception.

Why should someone wear scars to get an others attention why not just ask. Is it fear, Is it to impress people how much they are suffering is that how backwards our society has gotten. Or is it a backwards value system that is more in their power to control. Does it really matter how some achieve the fruits. I think it's just simply a contradiction of logic.

Low self image. Never shown the love as a child that is needed to build self confidence. Too much preschool too much day care not time with the mom as required to build a good image of oneself. The child grows up with the idea nobody loves them and they have no value, if not self destructive behavior then they turn to gangs etc to get acceptance. It's a sad sad thing that parents have brought this on their kids as the parents pursue their own selfish dreams.

Maybe they have problems with self-esteem.
Maybe they have poor judgement.
Maybe they like to flirt with danger - it gives them a thrill.
Maybe they like to be rescued.

There are books and articles written on this phenomena.
This type of person really needs a therapist, most likely, or rehabilitation.

Because this person has a bad self-image, doesn't like him/her self, they have deep emotional problems/scars, and tend to "turn it" inwardly; to keep from lashing out on others, such as Friends, Relatives.
