Are there people who remain single all their lives and actually enjoy it?

From what I've seen, marriage and family life are so difficult, but the only people I've ever known that have remained unmarried all their lives are either homosexuals (who can now marry where I live), very unattractive women, or men with extremely controlling mothers. Are there people who can remain unmarried their whole lives without being ugly, pathetic, or lonely? Do you know any such people who seem happy being single their whole lives?

you forgot about nuns and priests. there are those out there that can remain single all their lives and who enjoy it, without them being ugly, pathetic, or lonely. i know of a few of them. a couple being my friends, and the rest just people i know, like family friends. they seem to enjoy life without forming into relationships

let's begin with the word "single" it means alone, which is the wrong adjective to describe an unmmaried person. the fact, that you are not married does not mean that you can date, have sex or enjoy life at it's fullest. yes, I know several successful people that enjoy being unmmarried. most of us, tend to associate unmmarried people as unhappy people but that is not true. it actually is very smart, because if you realize that most of us, get married or follow the cultural traditions such as have a wife and kids when is no longer practical or might not be for us. our own family put the pressure on us to get married and have kids etc. but they are not honest about the disadvantages and how you can screw your life if you decide to start a family before you are ready to do so.

there is a difference between people that do not married because they have low self esteem and those that are secure about what they want in life and choose that path because is what makes them happy. what? don't tell me that being able to date whoever you want , travel wherever you want to and not be attach to one person is a bad!..I think that more people now days are choosing to remain unmmarried. so this will change in the near future as more intelligent people realize that getting married, family and kids is not for everyone!

You seem to carry such a small opinion of the singles out in the world.

Most of us stay single for simple reasons: Haven't found the right one and NOT willing to settle for the first thing that walks into our lives.
Plus, people living on Social Security will lose a portion of that money if they marry or work over 20 hours a week. So they live together instead.

Not all single people are ugly, unsocial, unfit morons with over-bearing mothers.

Happiness is a choice, not a couple. There are people who remain single all their lives that are not unattractive. Many of them are devoted to a cause instead of to a significant other. Some of them may be trying not to attract attention and don't bother to compliment their looks. Some have lost their soulmate through death and wanted to live with the memory.

There is this friend's aunt. She is like 60 and she has been single her whole life and seems very but very happy and looks younger than 60.
The secret? Having an own life, activities, people to love....loving life itself and she is not ugly or something...I think she was smart for not getting married. Lol

my aunt has never married. she was engaged at teh age of 60 but her fiance dies in is sleep before their wedding..i thinka person can be single and happy but at times, they feel lonely...no , my aunt is pretty so that is not a factor...sometimes it takes a long time to find the right peson for you...and it can easily be taken away, so don't mock these people for whatever reason they are alone.you trade one set of problems for another, theyare alone and have all the freesom in teh world to do whatever they want to do, whene evr they want to do without answering to someone, while people who marry, always have to answer to someone and they loss their freedom of choice.

For some odd reason, females seem to be able to do this more than men. And yes, they are straight and good looking, but just don't desire marriage. And are quite happy and content in their choice.

There are celibates and asexuals, although rare and questionable at times...and no, some are not ugly at all but on the contrary. Ever saw a really hot priest..?
