That depends did he say "we are just going through the motions". If so that is a reference to a relationship being over but not officially ended.
If he said "we are going through the motions." That sounds like he was saying that you two are working towards marriage.
Either way you should ask him what he meant by it.

It means neither of you excites the other and neither is making any effort to cleave to the other, but both are too lazy to go find someone that is worthy of a relationship with.
At least that is how he feels. You may have a different view, which has now been made redundant seeing it is not reciprocated.

That it is a pretence - you are going through the motions but not the reality, it will not come to anything and definately not end in marriage.

I can tell you what it means to me, and would this mean to me if I would be so jerk to tell this to my girlfriend but you will not like it, the best you can do is to seat down with him and a coffee and make yourself and himself clear.
Nobody likes to waste the best years just for fun, so take it with maturity, but firmly... where are you going, what you are going to do with your life, how I feat there and so on...
Don't get distress, get serious but give space for real answers to real questions.

Seems to me he feels like everything is very repetitive and boring and nothing is very exciting. I suggest you surprise him in some way that he wouldn't expect. Here are some ingredients to use:
Candles
Whipped cream
Chocolate
Handcuffs
Silk
Feathers
Strawberries
Music

That doesn't sound good. You need to sit him down and ask him what he meant. Don't let him wriggle out of it, either. You don't want to be wasting your time with someone who isn't committed to you, even if marriage isn't on the cards.
Good luck.

That he does not feel like your relationship is alive and vital, it is just habit.
