First the Adam case in 1999 in Florida, then the McCann case in 2006 in Portugal, it sure seems so to the rest of the world.
(I love the comment from the Florida police officer, after being told by the family that "people do this (leave their young children unattended in hotel rooms for 45-90 minutes at a time) all the time in England", "Well, maybe people in other countries eat their children, but that's not what we do!".)

I would have thought ALL British parents don't do this ALL THE TIME, but that is what the Adams claimed, and that is what the McCanns are claiming. And in both cases, the British public and media supported the absent parents 100%. So it must be true (that British parents routinely abandon their children) - right?

"Jon Clarke, 34, a physics teacher in London, said parents in Britain are not encouraged to take their children to restaurants, and that he would consider leaving his own 3-year-old alone if it was in a safe place where he could easily check on her."

Hallie, my dear. This is what the rest of the world thinks right now. Want to do something about it? Start a petitition, get 1,000 signatures from parents of young children who would never do this and send it to the BBC, or better yet, several press outlets. Don't let your voice be drown out by the chorus of boos you get every time you say what you think about the McCanns.

You'd believe it by some of the things you read on here, wouldn't you? But no, we're really not. If you read some of the more responsible replies in this case, I'm sure you'll answer your own question; people like myself, Eden, Dave S, Dan, Babysham, TripTipper and many others are all parents and have vehemently denied that we would ever do what the McCanns did. Please don't tar us all with the same brush, the majority of us are NOTHING like the McCanns at all.
edit: You know what? If I thought it would do any good, I'd be the first to get one started, but you've read some of the pro-McCann posts on here, it's like banging your head on the proverbial brick wall, and with the way the BBC and the press in general are skirting around the real issues in this...talk about running your own country down. I'm good, but I'm not a miracle worker!
As for the boos, I really don't give a damn about them. I can look at myself in the mirror because I know I am doing the best by my little girl, she's not missing because I put my wants before her needs, so if they don't like it, they can feck off back whence they came!
I have to live with me, and I can do that, the people who are important to me know the real me, the opinions of anyone else matter not one iota.

It's not the British, American or any other countries for that matter. It's just stupid parents who are selfish by not taking their children with them when they were out. We see it on the news at least once or twice in the summer, in this country. A woman left an infant sleeping in a hot car while she ran into the grocery store. Guess what happened to that child?
People like that should never had children.

I don't think you can generalise about such a wide issue as 'parenthood' every country will have its share of the better equipped ones and those lacking in the required skills.
I think parenthood (motherhood?) is not regarded as highly as it is in other countries. I am of Spanish descent on my father's side and I know how they adore their children, and it's very different to how I see things done here.
Perhaps more should be done in schools to emphasise how incredibly hard parenthood is, and that if you look beyond the cute, pink, powdered, sleeping baby, you have sleepless nights, post natal depression, financial hardship, loss of 'me' time and 'together' time. You have responsibility firmly weighted on your shoulders way beyond '18 years'. Life stops being spontaneous, even going out on a short shopping trip requires military planning. I always remember taking my son out for the very first time and how neither of us could believe the amount of items necessary for one tiny person.
I don't know if the British are necessarily any worse at parenting than anyone else, they just seem to be at the moment.

The British can be brilliant parents but there are a large number that are as you say piss-poor. My partner and I have witnessed atrocious parenting on many, many occasions but the ide that people leave their children in Hotel rooms unattended all the time in the U.K. is ludicrous. These parents clearly want something awful to happen to them.
