Tax income from cigarettes/ cigars etc is much higher than outgoings for smoking related illness. This is fact. This has been proven time and again.
This would not likely happen but IF all the smokers were to give up then yes, tax would have to go up to pay for NHS services.
Not all NHS services can be reproduced by BUPA, I am a BUPA member also and they cannot provide Accident & Emergency services. So a BUPA member still might call on the NHS on occasion.
For all the "smokers clog up the NHS", get a life. If the NHS was used less it would be funded less and still have ALL the same problems due to underfunding or rather, lack of decent utilisation of current funds.

what 50% tax on fags, whats the point if you all give up, is it to stop the tourist smoking, and yes i would be happy with a 50% tax rise on fags, its already 80%. i am a none smoker packed it up 15 years ago, i now live in Egypt where fags are 25p packet of twenty, so its not the cost why i do not smoke, they are a bad filthy addictive habit, far worse than marijuana, and the like. legalise the dope that's what i say?? and the British government will make it so expensive no one could afford it,

Ya know, I don't smoke, and I don't think it's a good idea, and I pay for my own healthcare.
However, the FACT is that government is taxing cigarettes to death simply because they know that people will pay it. It has nothing to do with trying to discourage smoking, banning it entirely is what they do when they want to discourage something. This is simply the government taking advantage of people.
Have you not noticed that they do the same thing with gasoline taxes? It's not about encouraging you to get better mileage. They don't care. They just know you're going to buy a lot of gasoline no matter what the price is, and they're going to gouge you for $.50 per gallon. All the while they point the finger at oil companies, who make about $.11 per gallon.

Very well put. If all revenue from tobacco were to cease, you know the Dems would find someway to recover it.
For those that are going to say. Oh no. The cost to Medicare will reduce simply because there wil be less tobacco related illnesses. If anyone believes that the governement would let it go at that, you've got another thing coming.
Just like the one above me just said.

For all those who think we smokers clog up the health syatem Think again! The government takes 9 billion each year from all tobacco products, it costs the NHS 1.5 billion to treat all smoking related disorders, half what it cost to treat eating related disorders. So the 7=billion pounds the smokers contribute and don`t use pays for alot of non smokers health care.

In fact the saving to the NHS would actually make the amount of tax we pay come down. The problem is that this would take about 40 years to work it's way through and by then there would be new things to tax us on.

No, they would be moaning about what obesity is costing the NHS after all those smokers start eating their way through life instead of smoking.

I smoke, and I don't let people live my life. All the government is doing is setting up business and homes for burglaries and robberies. From people who can't afford the prices. Much like now with the gas prices. How many drive offs are not being reported? Because people can't afford the prices either. When do we just have the government hook up the life lines to us, so they live our lives for us.

No, the history shows that even if they were banned, then the folks that complain about it would just move to a different subject to attack

Good question. Often wondered how we would cope without the extra income tobacco tax brings to the economy.
