First off...I HATE the Yankees. But, having said that, I love their history. I love the fact that they are willing to do whatever necessary to make a run at another title. If the other owners in the MLB would have the drive and desire to win that Steinbrenner does, the payroll disparity would not be as great and the other teams would have more of a chance each year. Now, if I was in Steinbrenner's shoes and had the disposable income of the winningest franchise in baseball history there are a couple of things that I would do...

First, I would send A-Rod, Giambi, and Jeter wherever they wanted to go. But in return I would want Scott Kazmir, Cole Hamels, and Francisco Liriano (after his Tommy John recovery).
Then I would tell Clemens and his "I'll be part of the team when I want to" attitute to stay home permanently.

With that drop in payroll, I would go after:
1B Ryan Howard
2B Chase Utley
SS Jose Reyes
3B Ryan Zimmerman
RF Delmon Young
CF Grady Sizemore
LF Matt Holliday
C Ivan Rodriguez

I know that Rodriguez at Catcher is not a young guy but the turn around in Detroit is no accident. When he got there he stabilized that pitching staff and turned them into World Series contenders.

I know this is unreasonable but you did say I could drop anyone and add anyone. So here is what would be the best baseball team in history....If only, if only...

First I would look to see where the weaknesses of other teams are and who on my team could meet their needs. Then I would put together a trade or trades for at least two if not three front line pitchers, even for those in the minor leagues with great potential. Absolutely no one on the current team except for Posada and Jeter would be exempt from a trade. I would look at this year as lost and start the rebuilding process NOW!! However, the Yankees never look to the future. They are a win now team with a win now owner, so I wouldn't expect then to respond as I have suggested. They will continue to grow old and lose. Their pitching is absolutely pathetic for a contender, and unless and until they tend to that problem, they will not be champions again.

Chow!!

I think Abreu would have to go..He should be such a powerful player and he is such a let down for them...I think A-Rod really isnt an asset to the team either because, although he is a great hitter..Noone in NY really seems to like him..You have to have a TEAM not a team..I honestly dont think Clemens is going to do much for the team except drain their bank account..I think the Yankees need to start rebuilding their pitching staff but not with 45 year old guys..

first off i would get rid of giambi get at least some quality pitching, second carl pavano: he has hurt way too much and he hasnt done anything yet to help.bring back afonso soriano to play second.there is also a thought: trade some prospects for a guy like willis who is a gtreat pitcher but under torre he would albsolutly dominant.i would dump a-rod but bobby abreu i would in a heart beat get some relief pitchers to strengthen the bullen to help support clemens,pettite,etc.....

Pavano, Mussina, Igawa, Farnsworth, Giambi would all be gone at the end of the year.

Id like to replace them with Santana, Verlander, Peavy, Zumaya and Vlad.

That would be for the first year, and we would work in younger players each year after that, but that start would be enough to give us a WS right away.
