they do in portugal. bottom line is tobacco is an undesirable product which cost national welfare MILLIONS!
better that outlawing it (which would cause riots) is to make it more and more expensive. I smoke, but i agree w the taxes.

Yes, the French Government raise cigarette prices every year. Wine and spirits stay about the same because competing supermarkets fix their own prices. Petrol prices (here in réunion) are fixed and are more expensive than on mainland France. It depends on some vague excuses concerning the price of a barrel of oil on the world market.

Yes they do along with drink, petrol. The last big new tax was on all insurance policies be for house, car, belongings or life. UK is one of the heaviest taxed countries, we have more CCTV cameras than any where else in the world and we have the silliest immigration laws in the world.
If I was young enough and rich enough and could afford to do so I would get out of the UK now and never return. Weather is pretty awful as well.

Ha! In Ireland you have to take out a loan from the credit union now to buy a pack of fags. The price is ridiculous. I know they are bad for you etc, but I think smokers are financing the health service on their own with the amount of tax they pay. It costs 7Euro and 5cents for 20 Silk Cut. Robbery. Most expensive form of suicide in the world!

Well, I'm from UK, but live in Malta and yes the government here does that too, although it doesn't affect me, but they raise prices on everything, like petrol and they keep adding extra taxes onto everything they can think of!!!

In America, I don't know if it's every year, but yes, 2 years ago I paid like 3.50 for Marlboro, now it's 4.72. I'm struggling to quit. I'm sick of paying to kill myself
