Does the head need to be shimmed after fittning new valves and what are the valve clearences?

Depends on how much you "skimmed". Some engines will have interference between the valves and pistons, and the piston tops must be "skimmed" an equal amount. Another consideration, the compression ratio will be higher and require the use of premium gas. The solution would be to get a solid copper head gasket, the kind used on race cars, the required thickness to restore the proper compression ratio. The last consideration, which should have been really the first: Is there such a gasket available for your engine?

You cannot shim a cyl head,its the valve clearance that is set by shims-you should not need a thicker head gasket
