Computer 101

Hard drive = your filing cabinet - how many more file can you cram in there

RAM or Random Access memory = your dining room table - how many files can you spread out and still work

Cache - the tube the files transfer from the filing cabinet to the dining room table = the bigger the faster your computer runs

NOW - after you use a file - the computer just slams it back in - wherever it wants to

SO - you will want - once a month or so - to check disk defrag
amd may be even disk repair - to make sure your baby runs properly

now If you are a games - you will want more RAM to make the graphics look good and not stutter

for disk defrag and disck scan

START
My Computer
right click - on Local Disc C:
left click properties
second tab - Tools
Error checking - check NOW
Click both boxes - START (you may get a message that you have to reboot - as this program loves to be the ONLY one running - say yes - next time I reboot)

below that = defragmentation - click defrag now
it will ask to analyze the drive - OK
then it may say - not now - or Defrag - and show you how messed up everything is

Your computer will run faster because you did these two operations

best of luck!

Disk space is a place where you save your documents , photos , videos...
Memory is a place that the computer uses to execute the programs (Windows, Word, Paint...) both are important and should have a great capacity.
Example:
a Disk of 300Go and a Memory of 1 Go are excellent.

disk space mostly refer to the capacity of the hard disk, while memory is used by the computer to store some information, unlike disk space memory is volatile, it means that any information saved can only be used when the computer is running, and memory has two kinds.

Random access memory (usually known by its acronym, RAM) is a type of data storage used in computers. It takes the form of integrated circuits that allow the stored data to be accessed in any order — that is, at random and without the physical movement of the storage medium or a physical reading head.

The word "random" refers to the fact that any piece of data can be returned quickly, and in a constant time, regardless of its physical location and whether or not it is related to the previous piece of data. This contrasts with storage mechanisms such as tapes, magnetic discs and optical discs, which rely on the physical movement of the recording medium or a reading head. In these devices, the movement takes longer than the data transfer, and the retrieval time varies depending on the physical location of the next item.

Read-only memory (usually known by its acronym, ROM) is a class of storage media used in computers and other electronic devices. Because data stored in ROM cannot be modified (at least not very quickly or easily), it is mainly used to distribute firmware (software that is very closely tied to specific hardware, and unlikely to require frequent updates).

to respond to the 1st question - disk area is your problematical stress area, and memory is your RAM RAM (Random get right of entry to memory) is what your computing device makes use of to shop the information an utility desires mutually as that's working. So, all your open applications would be making use of RAM (you will discover which classes are making use of it and how plenty they are making use of via pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, and then going into the procedures tab). in case you have not got adequate RAM for each and all the applications you're working, this gadget will would desire to take information off of the problematical stress, which takes longer, and your overall performance will go through. So, particular, RAM is important, and upgrading is many times recognized because of the fact the quickest and least confusing thank you to boost gadget overall performance. frequently, you're able to have a minimum of 1GB of RAM - 2GB once you're working Vista.

both are needed for smooth operation, but memory is the important one of the bunch. with out memory your computer won't function.
Memory tells the puter what to do and disk space is a storage space for files and programs and the like.
Memory is known as RAM
Now to complicate this anwser you can actually allot a certain amount of disk space to act as memory when your real memory becomes low. this is called Virtual Memory(VM).
What this is, is an allotment of disk space that can act as memory for the computer in times of heavy load on the Ram,such as running multiple programs or using very large files.
hope this helped clear up a few things for you.

Memory is more important than disk space. Hard disk drives are inexpensive and can be replaced or a second one added fairly easily.

Both are equally important. Disk space refers to the amount of space that you have got on your hard disk or any other secondary storage device like Floppy, CD, DVD, pen drive etc. However, memory refers to primary storage, i.e. RAM. You need secondary storage to keep your data, while you need primary storage to execute them.
