Well, I personally can't say what it is like for a Red Sox fan in New York but, a friend of mine went to Yankees stadium for the last series and she said that for the most part, it was awful but she sat next to a very nice Yankees fan..
As for Yankees fans in NE...I drive a school bus that is decorated with Red Sox magnets and stickers and I wear Red Sox apparel every single day of the season..When a kid gets on my bus with Yankee stuff on..I have fun teasing them but, they know I am kidding and we have fun with it..I never allow anyone to say "Yankees...su%$...or stink" because, as I tell the kids, they dont really Su%$,,,we just don't like them..lol...
I have a healthy respect for a fan from any team..Just be loyal to your team and have fun with it!!!

As someone who grew up in New York City, and who has spent a year in college in Boston, I'll have to say it's harder for Yankee fans to be in Boston.
First, because NYC is split in two between the Yankees and Mets. Therefore, any baseball fan you encounter on the street has about a 1 in 2 chance of being a Mets fan. And if they are, they are likely to show the Red Sox fan some love, since they are also about anything that's anti-Yankee.
Second, because the Yankees are the more historically successful team by a long shot, Yankee fans tend to have evolved to being elitist and arrogant, and have taken their success granted. They feel like there is no need for an attempt at comparison between them and the Sox. The Sox fans on the other hand, through all those years of choking and losing, do not have this taking-things-for-granted attitude. Because much of the baseball world has felt that they played second fiddle to the Yankees, they have developed hatred of the Bronx Team, the "Evil Empire", that is on another level than the dislike of the Fenway Team by the Yankees.
This also explains why the Mets (another team who has had not the most brilliant history of winning) fans also hate the Yankees, but the Yankee fans probably don't hate the Mets to the same level.
(People in Boston think that their rivalry is intense, but they've got no idea how intense the Yanks-Mets is. When the Yankees and Red Sox are playing, there is always a clear cut home field advantage. However, in a subway series game, the attendance is more evened out. Imagine tens of thousands of Yankee fans sitting right next to tens of thousands of Mets fans. That brings the atmosphere to another level!

I think it is much harder for Yankee fans to be in New England because there is such a inherent hatred by Red Sox fans toward Yankee fans. I would guess that it has to do with years of frustration. If anything I think it has gotten worse since the Red Sox won in 2004. The reality of it is that it will take generations upon generations for the Red Sox to match the Yankees when it comes to success in the world series. They were so focus on getting the "curse" off their backs, that they didn't see the forest because of the trees!
Meanwhile Yankee fans just go about their business knowing all along which franchise is and remains superior. I truly believe that Red Sox fans would be just as happy if they went 18-144 for the season just as long as those 18 wins were against the Yankees. It's sad really because Red Sox fans have forgotten how to enjoy each baseball season for what it is. It's a game, not a war!!

Take it from me, it's 10 times harder for Yankee fans to be in New England. In NYC, you can get lost in the crowd and wear your sox apparel without scrutiny. Besides there are fans from other clubs that that wear their team'a spparrel cause New York is such a diverse town.
In New England towns and cities, you don't get lost in any crowd..you stand out clearly. Not easy for Yankee fans.

probably harder to be a red sox fan in newyork. so many kids at my school are yankees fans (including my algebra teacher...what's up with that?!?!?) and we are just mean to them/ignore them. but in new york, I'm sure the fans are a lot rougher or whatever, though I do know a few nice yankees fans. the thing i hate about yankees fans in new england though is that a lot of them are yankees fans because they think that the yankees are more "ghetto" or whatever.

The rivalry is so intense that I am sure it is unpleasant for Yankee fans in New England AND Red Sox fans in New York. Both get ribbed and ridiculed. I give both credit for cheering for the team they love, no matter where they come from.

Both Boston and New York have very passionate fans, but I feel New Yorkers take it to another level. I wore a Detroit Tigers hat while I was in Manhattan and heard some four letter words being directed towards me, so I can only imagine walking around with a Boston Hat.

I am a season ticket holder for the Yankees games. As a bleacher creature I have seen the cops escort people out of the stands for seeming to do nothing more than wear a Red Sox hat. (This goes for Mets, Giants and practically any other hat than a Yankees hat.)
Go Yankees!!!
