will i be affected by any copywrite laws if i posted an excerpt from salman rushdies novel ?

its called " the ground beneath her feat" n i want to post n excerpt in my hi5 journal.

There is no problem with using short excerpts of another person's work, provided you quote the source. If you don't quote the source, you can be in trouble for "plagiarism," which means passing off another person's work as your own.

You should show that this is an excerpt and give credit to Mr. Rushdie.

I think that falls under the concept of "fair use" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use , so you will not be in violation of any laws.
