I'm normally not into cover versions of songs, especially when they're covers of anything by John Lennon - if it ain't broke don't try to fix it, that's what I say.
But I was skipping through channels on telly last night and found Green Day singing Working Class Hero. And i was actually dead impressed with it!
Am I alone in thinking that Mr Lennon would be incredibly proud of what they've done to it?

And, by the way, is it ever going to be released in the UK

Yeah it is going to be released in the U.K on the 25th of June I think and is featuring on the Amnesty International's CD of John Lennon covers.

And I totally agree...Lennon would be pround...both versions radiate with the intended anger at the injust British Class system, and is a perfect song for Green Day to have covered!

I'm really not suprised to see Green Day covering "Working Class Hero", it kind of fits into their whole little punk feeling and I'd bet they've changed it around a good deal.

I personally haven't heard anything about this cover being released anytime soon, it might just end up being like the American Idiot tour where they covered a lot of Queen ("We Are the Champions" and "We Will Rock You") so I'd look for them to maybe even cover some more Beatles / John Lennon. As for an actual release of this I'd say don't get too into it, the chances of them releasing it are very slim as far as I'm concerned since it does sound like one of those Queen stints.

As for John's own impression of the cover I'd say he'd be pleased with it at the very least but I'm not to sure he'd think it's really good. Of course he was a great songwriter looking for more ways to do things but still I'd say he'd definitely like it.

maybe the song sounds good, but if Mr. Lennon could see the talent-less following that Green Day has encouraged over the past several years, he'd puke.

If you look at 90% of the "rock" bands out there today, and what their stage presence, they all try to act like the lead singer from Green Day or that Pat Smear guy from Foo Fighters. Kind of look like they're getting electrocuted and stung by bees at the same time.

What ever happened to trying to be cool? Look at Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen. Regardless of what you think about their music, they LOOKED cool. These bands out today, all look like a bunch of 12 year old boys with no coordination.

Yoko Ono allowed the rights to be released for this song. All proceeds will go to charity. The version by Green Day is excellent.
