Dietary fibres are mostly cellulose and hemicellulose derivatives.
Thus they are not capable of being digested by us humans.
Most of them are insoluble or sparingly soluble in water.
Thus they pass unchanged through the Gastro-intestianl tract.
The cause water retention in the large intestine and the colon.
Hence the excreta becomes softer and smoother, allowing easy passage through the colon, preventing CONSTIPATION.
Besides the water retained by the fibers maintain moisture within the colon promoting growth of beneficial microorganisms, which synthesize Vitamin B12, D etc.
Dietary fibres are very important as you can see from the reasons mentioned. They form an integral part of a Balanced diet.
If the diet is devoid of fibres diseases like Constipation
Irritable bowel syndrome, collitis can occur.
It has long been believed that increasing fibre intake will also help prevent certain cancers, such as colon cancer.
Many people who are overweight have been shown to lose significant amounts of excess body fat simply by increasing the amount of dietary fibre, especially soluble fibre, in their daily diet.

The extra chewing time often required of high fibre foods also helps contribute to feeling satisfied, and as a result, a person on a high fibre diet is likely to eat less food and so consume fewer calories.
3. Cancer Protection - It has long been believed that increasing fibre intake will also help prevent certain cancers, such as colon cancer. There is a current debate going on in the scientific communities after a series of tests failed to show a concrete link between increased fibre consumption and a lower risk of developing cancer.
However, many argue that the antioxidants and flavanoids found in many high-fibre foods were key contributors to fibre’s cancer-preventing properties (the later studies were done using alternative fibre sources that lacked these cancer-fighting components). What is undisputable though is that a healthy, regular digestive system is necessary in the prevention of colon cancer, and getting enough fibre in your diet is essential for a healthy digestive system.
