Should they put an expenses cap instead?

It's OK the way it is. There will always be a great team and a toilet team no matter how much money they've put into it. Wouldn't it be great if the Royals compete one year? Probably won't happen but imagine them trying to take down the Yankees in an AL championship. Different things can happen is all I'm saying. The Royals aren't exactly fielding amputees. They can play ball.

There isn't a need, but the same purpose could be fulfilled with total (and audited) revenue sharing. If each team started with the same amount of money, how they spend it would make the only difference, yes?

Look for economic outrage to REALLY explode in a few years when Steinbrenner starts writing off the money he'll be putting into building the new park, lowering the Yankees' expenses so much that the team will be COLLECTING shared revenue.

A slightly less difficult but no more appealing (to the owners) plan would be to assign local broadcast rights to the home team. Instead of selling 162 games at Kansas City rates, the Royals could sell 81 games locally, and the rights to those 81 games at the rates of the visitors' home markets -- six (or whatever) at NYC rates, six at Boston rates, etc. And choose not to buy all the team's road games. Instant opportunity for revenue disparity, good or bad; but the Yankees would have to buy every game. Think YES-subscribing fans would still pay the full fare if they wouldn't be getting every single game?

Salary Caps protect the players that are trying do the right thing for the game, and it allow you to have tender offers that gives a players a second look before they are put out to pasture. Imagine being the minors for five years, to be dumped on you second year in the majors. This will also make free-agency period more cpmpetitive. Baseball plays about 196 games a year, and the players in the top tier are compensated well, but it does not fair well with free agency unless you have the stats.

GET better owners owning teams. A salary cap and revenue sharing would be bad for the game.
