I think the name LIAM would be a Noble name and I would be proud to have it. Liam pronounced LEE-am is a boy's name used in English and Irish Gaelic. It means a "Determined protector." It is actually a variant of William. Actor Liam Neeson is one of the well known personalities bearing the name.
The boy's name Shamus \sh(a)-mus\. Variant of Seamus, the Irish form of James (Hebrew) "he who supplants(To displace and substitute), Shamus is a very rare male first name and a very rare surname. I dont think with a meaning like this it wouyld be a suitable name for a child! Although I think Liam is a unique name and has character.

Liam falls near the "least commonly named babies" according to Social Security Administration for birth records for past 15 years. Shamus wasn't even in the list, which would mean it's a rare spelling or name.

I am also an fellow Irish man and i think Liam is a much better choice(have grown up with one, no negative feedback from it). Shamus on the other hand i think may attract a little bit of teasing and or he will adopt his last name as his first which is i myself had done and was never angry about. (please do not take internet advice too seriously if this is a serious decision).

i had a Shamus in my classroom when I taught 2nd grade. He was a great kid from a good family. Only good memories of that name....
Never had a Liam, but it sounds traditional and a tribute to your heritage. Can't go wrong with honoring the past.
*I am a big fan of honoring family
