Venus has an extremely thick atmosphere, which consists mainly of carbon dioxide and a small amount of nitrogen. The pressure at the planet's surface is about 90 times that at Earth's surface—a pressure equivalent to that at a depth of 1 kilometer under Earth's oceans. The enormously CO2-rich atmosphere generates a strong greenhouse effect that raises the surface temperature to over 400 °C (752°F). This makes Venus' surface hotter than Mercury's, even though Venus is nearly twice as distant from the Sun and receives only 25% of the solar irradiance.

Venus is scorched with a surface temperature of about 482° C (900° F). This high temperature is primarily due to a runaway greenhouse effect caused by the heavy atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Sunlight passes through the atmosphere to heat the surface of the planet. Heat is radiated out, but is trapped by the dense atmosphere and not allowed to escape into space. This makes Venus hotter than Mercury.

Venus is the hottest planet because it's atmosphere is in a runaway greenhouse state. According the theory, the Earth is similar to Venus, and contains about as much carbon in it's rocks as Venus does in its atmosphere. Carbon in Venus's atmosphere traps heat like CO2 does on earth. So at some critical threshold it is presumed that if enough CO2 is released into Earth's atmosphere, the temperature will rise, releasing more CO2 (from burning trees, etc), raising the temperature further, which will release more CO2, rasing the temperature further, releasing more CO2, etc, etc, until all the carbon in the rocks is it in the atmosphere and Earth will be like Venus: 900 degrees F and with an atmospheric pressure of 90 bars (instead of 1 bar). It's happened on Venus because it's closer to the sun that the Earth. It isn't likely to happen on Earth because it's already been very much hotter than now during the Eocene period, and no runaway greenhouse effect then.

I don't think Venus is the hottest planet; that would be Mercury. However, Mercury always faces the same side to the sun, and that side gets extremely hot, while the opposite side is extremely cold (because of no atmosphere). It is possible that the average temperature of Mercury could be less than the average temperature of Venus. Venus is hot because of the greenhouse effect from the high concentration of CO2 in its atmosphere. That temperature is more or less uniformly distributed over the planet because the planet rotates with respect to the sun.

even though mercury is the closest to the sun venus is the hottest planet since it is covered in thick hydrogen clouds which trap the sun's heat making it the hotter than mercury.

The gasses (methane and CO2) in the atmosphere of Venus trap the heat from the Sun in a fashion similar to whats happening on Earth and causing global warming.

It's because its atmosphere lets in heat but doesn't let it all out again, the 'greenhouse effect'.

mercury being the first planet is supposed to be hotter but due to it's small size & atmosphere the heat is not absorbed as much as venus
