When I transfer a file off of a hard drive that I am connected to through a local network it's almost instant, why can't the internet be that fast?

Because when you send a file through the LAN, you are governed by the cables speed which is pretty fast ( 100 Mbps or so ) and all that you need is a switch which directly sends the packets back to the destination which is physically connected to your pc.
While in the internet, your PC sends it packets through the LAN, then it reaches the Switch, and the switch finds that the destination IP is another network, so it sends the packets to a Router, and this router by it's turn tries to find the network that the destination IP is a member of , which could mean routing the packets 2 or 3 more times among routers, and since routers are not as idle as the switch, they are most of the time congested or so , and at the end, the WAN connection might be slower than the LAN connection, so you will be coverned by this speed ... so It takes time to go back and forth through the process, and it takes time and effort

Well, a LAN is a direct connection between computers. When you download something off the Internet, the file is being routed through a number of different computers between yours and the one the file is on. Also, the Internet is designed for flexible and unlimited connectivity, meaning a "direct" connection like a LAN is not possible.

An area network aka lan is either 10/100 ir 100/1000 a internet connection IS possible to go that fast but it costs lots of money but all it is is that your lan is just a faster speed

Because the connection on the internet has more noise and junk in it than the LAN connection has, and the demand for bandwidth on the internet is much greater than that of a LAN.

Because its not. Cable and DSL services provide any where from 1mb to 6mb transfer rates more or less depending in your area. Office LANs are typically 10/100/1000 mb transfer rates.

If you are using a switch to conent your lan, speed will be uniform.. but if hub is used, there will be problems like you said. But if you are tranferring a file to a computer in the same LAN please use IPMESSENGER. its a wonderful software which would transfer the files in a jiff. for this the other computer should also have this.. its only of few kbs..and can be downloaded in seconds...good luck

a standard lan is 100 mbs (100 million 1's and 0's per second) over the internet you are lucky to get 1mbs in actual speed -

its because of low bandwidth of public networks eg telephone cables etc. but in LAN we make use of twisted pair cable or optical fibre cable which are faster than public networks and moreove there is low network traffic in our LAN than in internet.

Data transfer rate is not constant in all mediums.

The Distance is also a matter.

In a word or two, "Traffic and Bandwidth." traveling countless miles on a highway with billions of other commuters, has it's drawbacks. LAN is wide open highway, and very short trips.
